Gooood evening!
So, I had the interview this afternoon and I wanted to put out a small update post. The culmination of all my work for the last week (and really, actually, for the last year or so) has all lead up to my interview today for my first web developer job. I’ve definitely been putting in the hours behind this here computer and even postponed my daily JavaScript code challenge, so I could have my work done and prepped for today. They apparently hadn’t looked at my portfolio site and didn’t seem to have any interest to do so, so meh. It was still good experience. Also, I’ll start my code challenge again tomorrow… I’m going headlong into API/JSON parsing.
As for the interview, they were definitely looking for a Java developer. I do have a little Java experience from my time with Udacity’s Android dev nanodegree, so I was able to talk myself out of the paper bag. I’m pretty undecided if I won their approval, though, as it has been a while since those days and their has been a lot of information crammed into my brain since. I did do my best, though, and at the end of the day, forgetful or not, nothing is going to change how I did now, so all I can do is wait.
They said they’re wrapping up their search tomorrow, though, so I should hear back relatively quickly. I’m trying not to get too enthused in case I’m not chosen, but it seemed like a reeeally great business. I got there a bit early (I usually do), but I got to listen into this team building exercise they were doing and it just sounded so fun. Sitting in the little lobby area, watching everyone go back and forth and interact with each other (and even with me), you could tell they were all close. I want to work somewhere like that! It just seems so wonderful.
At my last job (the one in the about section), not only was I essentially an outcast for being different (the computer guy in a shop), I was further estranged for trying to get people to come together. Except, of course, for when I’d offer to buy pizza and have a group lunch with people. Then everyone was willing to be my friend… for a half hour or so.
This is one of the things for which I’m looking in my job search and I’m definitely not applying everywhere (it’s a luxury in which I probably shouldn’t be indulging considering how much money I don’t have) unless it sounds like a place in which I could really fit. Today, this was one of those places. Plus, their project styles and philosophies were greatly similar to mine.
Tomorrow can’t come quick enough. Trying to have low hopes, but the more I think about it, the higher they get. Wish me luck and for now, have a good night.
Thank you much.
